What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy involves a series of exercises performed in a warm thermoneutral pool (33.5 – 34.5 °C), where the body neither gains nor loses temperature. It can be undertaken by a wide array of age groups suffering from a variety of conditions and disabilities. The water provides support, buoyancy, warmth, resistance to movement, and compression.

What we offer at Mill Park Physiotherapy:

Hydrotherapy is conducted in small groups at Thomastown Recreation and Aquatic Centre under the supervision of a physiotherapist, who is experienced in conducting hydrotherapy classes for a wide range of people with different conditions.

Many conditions can be helped by hydrotherapy, some of which include:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Sporting injuries

  • Arthritic conditions

  • Pre and postnatal exercise

  • Work-related injuries

  • Recovery from orthopaedic surgery (particularly knee and hip replacements)

Benefits of hydrotherapy and water immersion

  • Strengthen muscles

  • Mobilise joints

  • Relieve pain by reducing the transmission of pain messages to the brain

  • Promote relaxation

  • Improve general fitness

  • Improve balance and coordination

  • Increase blood supply to the muscles

  • Decrease joint compression forces

  • Increase elasticity of connective tissue

Hydrotherapy Policy: All patients must undergo an assessment to determine suitability, and create an individualised water-based exercise program. If you are not currently seeing a physiotherapist, an assessment can be arranged by calling reception on 9436 9666 or book with one of our physiotherapists using the link below.
